Day 3 Raw Vegan Morning Update

by Rian on March 17, 2009 · 4 comments

in Updates

I fell asleep immediately upon going to bed last night, which is awesome! (And unusual these days). I did wake up several times throughout the night (I had my bedroom window open and the blinds were banging around), but each time I woke up, I felt very comfortable and drowsy and would drift right off again.

I’m beginning my day with some cantaloupe.

Oh, and the scale is down yet another pound this morning. My entire body already looks and feels firmer overall, including my chin (a trouble spot since I inherited my mother’s infamous “chin”).

If this weight loss continues, I will seriously have to rethink my nutritional beliefs. All these years I’ve thought (all) carbs were the enemy. Now it turns out that that may not be the case…

Some of you have expressed concern over certain nutritional deficiencies that are occurring in my daily menu. First and foremost, I’ve never posted or kept track of my daily nutrient intake, and I’m positive that I have never met the daily requirements on any one day of my life. (Except maybe on the days I ate salmon). I believe now that I’m getting more vitamins and minerals than I ever have on a daily basis! And despite the rapid weight loss, I’m not getting feelings of weakness or low electrolytes like usual.

Anyway, I feel vibrant, alive and cheerful this morning. I will update later with my calorie and food totals!

Day 2 Raw Vegan Morning Update

I will be updating this blog once or twice a day with my experiences and posting my daily menu at the end of the night. Feel free to leave any comments or suggestions on it!

I had an amazingly hard time falling asleep last night. I went to bed around 12:30am but tossed and turned for hours. Then every time I started to drift off, I felt that falling sensation and would jerk awake. Many, many times… I doubt I fell asleep until around 4am! It’s 8:45am here and I wouldn’t even be up were it not for the fact that a maintenance guy is supposed to be here any minute to fix my garbage disposal and bathtub faucet. I’m going to ask him to turn up my water heater so I can finally get really hot showers and baths.

I woke up with the flattest stomach I’ve had in… well, ages. Which is pretty darn incredible given all the fiber and carbs I had yesterday! So I decided to get on the scale despite the fact that I am PMSing… and guess what? I am down 2.5 pounds overnight! I’m back down to my 15.5 loss weight! Yay! And considering it’s PMS time, I probably weigh even less.

Speaking of PMS, my symptoms have been very mild this time. Very little emotional upset (although some).

I’m beginning my day once again with a couple of pears – one very large bosc pear and a medium sized bartlett. I didn’t mention yesterday that I had a green smoothie, made simply with just spinach and bananas – 3 bananas and maybe 2 or 3 ounces of spinach, and water. It came out totally smooth and fabulous! I will be having another one today.

The sun is shining brightly this morning and it’s supposed to be in the 70’s, so I’m also eagerly looking forward to taking a walk a little later.

My super-sharp visual upgrade doesn’t seem to be happening this morning, but that’s OK.

Anyway I will update later on with today’s menu.

I got on the scale despite it being TOM and I am actually 15.5 pounds down now from my highest weight! I am so excited about this. I probably have a couple of extra pounds of water on me, too… I will get on again in a few more days to see.

Quick Saturday Update

in Updates

Scale was down another 1.2 pounds today… body fat % stayed the same, oddly enough, although I walked for 3 hours yesterday and ate lightly. I’ve been sticking mostly to 2 meals with a couple of small snacks. It seems to suit me better than 3 meals, especially since I tend to eat breakfast around 10 or so. I don’t usually eat my next meal until 5pm or so, which is too late to be considered lunch.

I don’t know how the foot body fat % thing can be accurate… if I lose a pound of fat around my stomach, how can it measure it in my foot? Hmm…

Yesterday I felt wonderful all day/night and today I woke up with a lot of energy. I worked out on my elliptical for 30 minutes earlier today and am planning to go shopping with my sister later, which will be at least 3 extra hours on my feet.

I’m still staying on my eating plan (veggies, a little fruit, protein, seeds, nuts) although I’ve cut back on the cheese and peanuts a bit. It seems like the detox has slowed down for the time being.

I officially have 1.2 pounds to lose until I am at my “15 pounds lost” milestone… hopefully after today’s exercise – plus tomorrow’s planned hour-long walk around the river (since it’s supposed to be in the 70’s here again!) I’ll get down to it by Monday!

Someone commented on my last post that detox diets don’t work, then linked to a news article about it, then followed up by saying that googling doesn’t make me an expert on nutrition. I think we have another case of someone not reading my blog and making a comment… Claire, I’m not doing a detox “diet”. I’m eating very nutritiously and consuming large amounts of raw & cooked organic veggies, a little fruit and organic proteins, plus a little bit of cheese, nuts and seeds. There is extensive documentation, books, research and scientific data proving that this way of eating naturally detoxes the body of toxins.

Later Update

So, I got on the scale this evening and the 1.5 pounds were gone, as well as another half pound. Who knows what’s going on with the water weight thing, but all of my current-sized pants are literally swimming on me. As a matter of fact, I cannot recall a time when these particular pants were this loose! Even when I technically weighed 3 or 4 pounds less on the scale!

I am going to try my best to just stay off the scale for a while. Clearly I’m losing weight at a pretty decent rate regardless of what it says. I can see and feel the loss in several areas – my thighs, hips, legs, stomach, bottom, waist and face/neck.

So, I just got off the phone with my friend B from Nashua. Some of my long-time readers will remember him… he’s my old party/drinking buddy from New Hampshire. We talk maybe once or twice a month now on the phone. I actually miss his company – we had a lot of fun hanging out last year around this time. He definitely has a different outlook and philosophy on life than I do (a lot more relaxed and simple), but somehow when we hang out, we have a lot of fun. I’m planning to go visit New Hampshire sometime in late Spring, after I first visit Southern Cali.

Speaking of which, I am so bored of Tulsa right now! I hate to say it, but it’s true. If my car had a little less mileage on it, I’d literally hop in it right now and take off for So Cal to visit my family and spend some time in Beverly Hills, but my car is getting up there in the miles. If I drive anywhere far at this point, it may have to be in a rental. I’m thinking about possibly getting a new car soon, but… I’m not looking forward to the hassle. My car is running fine right now, but I can tell it’s getting tired.

Anyway, I’m still waiting for my other site to get fixed. Tech support is taking FOREVER. Ugh.

Friday Update

in Food Photos, Meals, Updates

TGIF!!

My lunch:

That’s plain yogurt with a sprinkling of cinnamon, which is supposed to be good for the blood sugar. There is also a romaine herb lettuce salad with tri-colored bell peppers, carrots, and sesame seeds. There’s a small piece of sharp cheddar thrown in for good measure.

I am feeling fabulous today!!! Despite waking up with a painful neck and shoulders AGAIN, I got up, ate my now-usual breakfast, worked out on my elliptical, and took the following supplements (which I know are contributing towards my “good” feeling): 2 coconut oil capsules, 1 kelp tablet (which has iodine in it – needed for detoxification of impurities, plus helps the thyroid), 1 chewable sugar-free Vitamin C/E tablet (sweetened with stevia), and a Zinc tablet.

I am planning to have an organic chicken breast and veggies for dinner. Later tonight I may be going out to a restaurant with some friends, but I refuse to touch anything at the restaurant except perhaps salad and mineral water. We usually go to Ihop or Village Inn (yuck to both), which are unfortunately two of the only restaurants that stay open late around here. Ihop has a great-tasting chicken ceasar salad, but they – like most other restaurants – flavor the salad with MSG and other artificial seasonings. No thanks!

I finally stepped on the scale this morning, and lo and behold I am down another couple of pounds! So I have checked off the -10 pounds box in the sidebar.

Fresh Food Is Delicious

by Rian on January 24, 2009 · 1 comment

in Organic Foods, Updates

I am sitting here eating some baked wild-caught Alaskan salmon… it’s brushed with a tiny bit of olive oil, garlic pepper and basil, and it is SO damn delicious! I got the salmon shipped to me from a company located in Alaska, and let me tell you, this is the best salmon I’ve ever had in my life. Not that I’ve had a lot of salmon over the years, mind you, but I did once have an absolutely delicious garlic butter salmon meal down in Cape Cod a few years ago that rivals this meal.

Can I just say that now that I’ve been eating mostly fresh/organic and MSG/chemical free foods for the past 6 days, that the more fresh/organic/natrual food I eat, the better it tastes? It’s like my taste buds have woken from a slumber. I’m having the fish with a side of chopped raw veggies (various colored bell pappers, cucumber, sugar snap green peas, celery, carrots, tomatoes). Remember when I used to seriously dislike eating raw veggies? Now I absolutely love them – they are incredibly delicious! I’m not even sure why they suddenly taste so good.

So yeah, I’m still doing the natural, healthy low-carb thing. The scale is on the move again, and already clothing is fitting differently. As a matter of fact, when I went to put on my winter jacket last night, I couldn’t believe how loose it was around the front! Usually when I zip it up, it’s tight. Last night I suddenly had plenty of room to breathe.

On a last note, I discovered that MSG is in every single packaged diet food you find on regular store shelves – Wheat Thins, fat free chips, Special K bars, cereal, sauces, low fat or ff dressing… the list goes on and on and ON. It’s in gourmet coffee. It’s in cottage cheese. All those new low calorie/fiber filled “Fiber One” treats are either full of MSG or Aspartame – sometimes both.

!!!!

I think all of the chemicals I was ingesting on a daily basis destroyed my sense of taste, and now that I’ve been abstaining from such products, my taste buds are coming back.

Wednesday Update

by Rian on January 21, 2009

in Meals, Updates

Great news… the scale moved down 2.5 pounds this morning! And the low-carb appetite suppression has also kicked in. I could barely finish my breakfast this morning.

It seems I have unintentionally (sort of) moved into a “eat carbs only in the morning” plan. I’ve been doing this for the past couple of days and I’m going to keep it up, especially now that I’m already noticing progress. I’m also already noticing an increase in energy. So I’m going to keep on going…

I have decided to ‘officially’ start keeping track of my weight from the number I am at now, instead of the highest-ever recorded weight on the scale that I was a few months ago. I’ve been around this weight (give or take a few pounds) for a while now, and it’s a good number to start from. I want a fresh start now that I’m on a VERY healthy plan and exciting losing trend.

Today’s breakfast was 1 ounce of fat-free mozzarella (which turned out to be totally tasteless), 1 piece of Ezekial toast w/organic raspberry fruit spread, 1 cup coffee w/tsp of raw honey, and about a cup of mixed organic berries. I had intended to have yogurt for breakfast but for some reason, the Brown Cow brand of yogurt went bad several days early… unfortunately I didn’t realize this until I had taken a bite. I opened another one and it had mold in it.

Lunch is going to be wild Alaskan salmon (shipped directly from Alaska via Fedex!) with spinach and chopped veggies. Dinner will likely be grilled wild shrimp, 2 eggs and some salad.

Today is going to be a busy day. Right now (as soon as I hit “publish” on this post) I am going for my hour-long walk around the river; after a quick shower, I am then going to get about 4 inches trimmed from my hair (right now it’s nearly to my waist!), then going to get my niece some presents because today is her birthday. Then I’m heading over there for the birthday celebration. (No cake for me!)

Monday Update

(I really need to come up with more creative post titles.)

Anyway, yesterday’s brunch didn’t get served until nearly 4pm, so it ended up being the only meal I ate! I had some pancakes, a strip of turkey bacon and some coffee. Later on that night I had a couple handfuls of microwave popcorn. So it’s really no wonder that I lost another pound on the scale, putting me down a grand total of 13 pounds from my highest weight! Yay!

My ears and throat seem to be back to normal, finally. As for my sinuses, well… still having some draining problems. It’s still causing me occasional pain and phlegm problems.

I think I may know a reason for my recent loss of appetite… it turns out that two of the meds I’m on have possible side effects of appetite loss. One is the prescription nasal spray I got a few days ago, and the other is the Lortab (hydrocodone). I’ve been taking the nasal spray every day (not that it seems to do much good!) and taking hydrocodone when needed for the bad sinus headaches, which isn’t very often at this point. I did have to take one the other day though and I noticed that I had absolutely NO appetite for about 8 hours following the dose, which made me wonder why. So I did some online research and found out that some people use Lortab/Vicodin to lose weight! How crazy is that – to use a narcotic painkiller to suppress the appetite?!

Anyway…today I had some chicken and a pear for a late breakfast. I’ve been invited over to dinner again by my sister and her boyfriend, but I probably won’t go since they are having fried chicken and all sorts of super-fattening (but delicious) stuff. Or maybe I will go and just have a small portion.

I really need to get back to exercising regularly!

Saturday Morning

I woke up this morning 2 pounds down and feeling a LOT better! The only complaint I would have is my ears still don’t feel “right”. But everything else is pretty much OK.

Yesterday was a bad day for me, as I got into a falling out with the guy I’d been seeing. We decided to go our separate ways. Last night I was pretty bummed out, but today I feel better. There are a million fish in the sea, and I deserve to be with someone who I’m a bit more compatible with.

I think my appetite is struggling to come back, so I’ve decided to have a real breakfast for the first time in a while. I’d still like to be down 20 pounds (from my start weight) by the end of this year, but it doesn’t seem likely. Nothing wrong with shooting for it though.

The good news is that today I have 50 days of sobriety, and I realized that although I’ve been eating very little over the past week, I haven’t had any blood sugar problems in quite some time! :-D

Update

November 10, 2008

My Calvin Klein jeans – which were only bought a month or two ago – were so loose this evening that I thought they had somehow come unbuttoned! All of a sudden I could slide them off without unbuttoning/unzipping them! Wow.
That, by the way, was after I ate a bacon & eggs meal [...]

In case you haven’t noticed, I got bored of updating this website. I needed a break so I took one.
