in Meals, Organic Foods, Updates

So…. I started feeling better yesterday as the day wore on. By about 5pm I felt pretty good! And so I decided to break my diet with macaroni and cheese and 2 glass of wine. (I wanted to finish off the bottle of organic merlot I had in my fridge).

Anyway, needless to say my soft skin has disappeared for the time being. Yeah – only one cooked meal and 2 small glasses of wine and BAM: gone. Sharp vision is gone as well. I know they will return in a couple days though.

I did not enjoy the cooked food or the wine and have decided that that was the last time I will enjoy either of those two items. For the past couple of weeks I have been looking for a strong inner conviction to truly become vegan. And last night I found it… I now believe in my heart that it is wrong – for various reasons – to eat meat or animal products. I got the conviction deep in my heart and soul, and it’s what I needed. A visit to sites like all-creatures.org and cok.net (compassion over killing) solidified my resolution.

I do not wish to offend the meat-eaters who read my blog so I will leave it at that! (Don’t worry – I won’t be preaching about not eating meat on this blog, either).

So as of today I am 100% raw vegan. I am no longer afraid of the detox and cleansing process that will likely continue to take place; I got through it yesterday (although painful) and I am fine.

Anyway, after all of my experimenting with fruits and greens over the past few weeks, I now know which ones I love and which I only ‘like’. I’m going to stick with the greens I enjoy – spinach, dandelion greens, bok choy and other tender baby greens for blending, and romaine and other lettuces for salads. My favorite fruits are oranges, bananas, pears, mango, berries, melons, grapes and tart green apples. I will still eat other fruits but not as often. I’m also eager for my trip to Southern California in another couple of months – I know they have lots of other fruit that I’ve never tried but want to (like dragon fruit, etc).

Today so far I’ve had a large navel orange and a green smoothie comprised of spinach, dandelion greens and bananas. I plan to eat a couple of pears, some berries, another orange or two, and some pineapple throughout the day. In the evening I’m making myself a large salad with romaine lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber slices, mung bean sprouts, broccoli sprouts and shredded carrots. (I’ll take a picture of it if it comes out OK!) An ounce of sunflower seeds will finish off the day’s eating.

Unfortunately it is extremely windy outside so I can’t go walking – plus it’s supposed to storm violently here later, so I’m stuck on the elliptical yet again.

TOM is over early this month (only 3 days!) so I will be weighing myself mid-week. I don’t want to weigh myself now since I had wheat pasta and wine last night… GOK what the scale says right now!

I know my blog has been confusing for a lot of people who follow it on a regular basis…. one reason for this is that I myself am quite confused at times. I go from one plan to another to another to another.

However, over the past 1 1/2 months, I have stuck to one main goal: cutting out most processed foods and refined sugar. That is one area that I have stuck to and been successful at. It’s the other stuff – like carbs, fruit, meat and dairy that I’ve struggled with finding a sustainable plan for.

In the past couple of weeks, I have done some experimenting with various foods and how they affected my body, mood and mind. I’ve come up with some pretty interesting results, as detailed in this post. See, when I did the high fruit diet a couple of weeks ago, I didn’t lose weight because I was still eating other stuff like dairy and was still getting a lot of cravings for crap. Since then I’ve realized I was getting terrible cravings for two reasons – a bad candida problem (which I’m now remedying with garlic and coconut oil), and because I was eating too large of portions of the fruit which spiked my blood sugar.

One thing I noticed while doing the high fruit diet, however, was my sense of mental clarity and moods. They were phenomenal. I could think more clearly than ever, and I had amazing moments of true clarity about things. The only other times in my life when I’ve gotten such clarity is either when I am meditating on spiritual matters or have a fever. (Yeah, I know that’s weird, but true). Also as mentioned previously my digestion was amazingly functional. Things moved through quickly and comfortably.

When I switched back to low carb and lots of meat/eggs and continued dairy last week, I immediately noticed that the mental clarity, great moods and ease of digestion went away. That’s why I only stayed on that plan for about five days. Something didn’t feel right. I missed my amazing emotional “highs” from fruit. I felt weird after eating meat and eggs. The only good thing that happened was my tummy bloating went back down. Plus, organic chicken and eggs seem to have more blood clots or veins in them, which literally grossed me out. (Anyone else notice this? Every time I ate organic chicken, I’d see a red dot/spot in them, and sometimes in organic eggs but never noticed that in non-organic chicken or eggs).

So several days ago I came up with a new approach: go back to fruits, but keep the portions small. So most of the day I eat fruits, spaced out for an hour or two between servings. And… the results are amazing! The mental clarity is back, as are the phenomenal moods. Best of all, when I eat my dinner at night, I am truly hungry and enjoy the meal immensely instead of simply eating because it’s a certain time. I also seem to be able to tolerate greens a lot more now! Green smoothies no longer make me bloated or give me terrible cravings!

I have decided to do something I have NEVER done: Go raw vegan. It may seem like a crazy thing to do, but I find the longer in the day I stick to raw foods, the better I feel! And the euphoria that I feel when taking in “live” foods like fruits and veggies is not imagined. Do a quick search on google for “fruitarian euphoria” and you’ll see it’s very common.

So as of today, I am a raw vegan. I am going to stay on this way of eating for at least 30 days to see what benefits I get out of it. Basically being “raw” means you eat at least 80% of your food in its natural living uncooked state. Meaning I can still have cooked greens once a day if I so choose. (And I do choose to, as I love eating spinach, chard and bok choy that way.)

This means no more dairy including eggs, and no more meats including fish. Also, I found out that I can stop taking my calcium, magnesium, potassium, and vitamin C supplements because the foods I am eating are full of these nutrients already!

If you got this far in my post, thanks for reading! This is day one of being a raw vegan… feel free to leave your opinions and comments. I’d love to hear them – even if they conflict with my opinions.
