My Taste Buds Have Gone Organic

August 27th, 2008 by Rian | 2 Comments | Filed in Updates

So, I’m back in New Hampshire!

I figured out why that breakfast I had in Eureka MO was so disgusting and salty-tasting…

I have lost my taste for highly processed foods. My taste buds now demand that I eat fresh, organic foods. I know this because I ended up having a couple of “bad” things on the road yesterday - a Jr. Whopper with cheese at Burger King, and a chicken wrap from McDonald’s. (I know, I know, awful, but I just gave in). Both meals were absolutely disgusting! They were salty and just tasted horrible. And I used to like those things before going fresh/organic.

So my taste buds have definitely changed for the better!

Anyway, I bought about a week’s worth of organic fresh food yesterday when I got home. I’m planning on going to Trader Joe’s later for some fruit.

I also double-checked that my gym membership was still active. It was. The woman behind the counter said I hadn’t been there in 128 days! Wow. That sounds about right since I’ve been gone since late March.

So I’m going to work out every single day that I’m here in some way. I’m also planning on taking walks in that beautiful park that I got tons of foliage pictures in last year, plus do my stationary bike.

So, B (my old drinking buddy) wants to hang out and go play pool. My longtime readers will remember that him and I used to play pool every Tuesday and Saturday. We got drunk together many times. Anyway, I may go shoot a game with him this Saturday, but I will not drink.

I haven’t yet gotten on the scale… I forgot to get on this morning before I ate. I’ll have to wait until tomorrow!

The Healthy Eating Pyramid

Forget about the USDA Food Pyramid… I just found something better - the healthy eating pyramid, and it looks like I am following it pretty closely these days! (Click to see the full size).

It comes from Harvard, so it must be right, right? :)

Anyway, I am happy to report that I have not experienced any (known) blood sugar problems or crashes in the past 3 days. Which is a miracle.

My new favorite food is shelled pumpkin seeds. They are SO good for you and SO delicious. (But SO calorie laden, I know).

Well, change of plans: It looks like I will be heading to NH near the end of next week at some point. I finally gave my NH landlord notice that I’m moving. So I’ll likely be heading back there next Friday, get there Sunday night or Monday afternoon, then stay until the 5th of September. I have a lot of preparation to do before then, like renew my AAA membership, get my car looked over thoroughly, see about a moving company that will move my books, etc. Fun fun fun!

I’m still going to shoot for the 7 pound weight loss… to expedite weight loss (or rather, inches loss), I’m going to take a 45-60 minute very brisk walk every single morning so long as it’s not raining. The weather has cooled a bit here so it won’t be too bad. I will also do 20 minutes on the elliptical every other day, plus the yoga stretches and some resistance arm weights every couple days or so.

Hypoglycemia…

August 7th, 2008 by Rian | No Comments | Filed in Miscellaneous

… is kicking my butt. Adding the protein cereal to my breakfast did not help matters.

I am going to have to start eating something like oatmeal with my breakfast (like one of you suggested) along with a protein and a fat serving. Fruit alone - even with cereal - is making me so weak and on the verge of passing out that I cannot stand it anymore. I did some research online and found this.

Sadly, my delicious iced fruit bars are going to have to be thrown out, they have too much sugar and not enough fiber. No more high-sugar items, all they do is cause trouble.

I’m not going to change much else, I am still going to continue eating healthy, nutritious foods. And exercise.

Food

July 25th, 2008 by Rian | 2 Comments | Filed in Miscellaneous

Well, I had to step up my eating plan a bit. In case you don’t know, I’m a recovering alcoholic and I only recently got sober. (I stopped a few times then started up again, then stopped again.) Anyway, my body is in “healing” mode - trying to heal itself from the damage I caused by drinking lots of liquor for a couple of years. It became apparent yesterday that I haven’t been eating enough to allow the process to happen.

So screw the weight loss for now, I need to heal. (Yes, you read the right!) Although I must mention that my stomach is currently flatter than it has been in years.

I’m still eating lots of fruit and still having my least meal of the day be low-carb (meat and veggies). But the rest of the day I’m adding in a bit more food than I was eating. I’m also eating more in the morning, like adding cereal in with the fruit. I am not going to “overeat”, but I am going to not try to lose or cut back as much for a while.

However, I have started exercising again. I started slowly and am working myself back up slowly.

When I start feeling close to or at 100% physically, which should happen within the next couple of weeks, I will cut the food back a bit once more.

But for now, healing and health is much more important!
