Whew! I was in the dentist’s chair for almost six hours today! The sedation plus all the work is what took so long.

The sedation went well, although they had to give me a bit more after I got there, then a bit more several hours later. I had an oxygen mask over my nose the entire time (hey – I wonder if I got any benefits from breathing in 5-6 hours worth of pure oxygen? Haha.) I was awake but kind of just drifting there, daydreaming, not caring about anything on a nice comfortable cloud. By the end of the day though I was hurting pretty badly from being in the chair all those hours, plus my mouth was a hurtin’ from all the work. My sister drove me to fill my prescriptions even though I was still groggy. By the time I got home though, I was pretty much 95% coherent.

Last night’s 2 Valiums made me very nice and comfortable. I had trouble falling asleep because my mind was racing, but I was extremely comfortable and relaxed. Valium is some GOOD stuff.

Tonight’s dinner (along with soup and lots of water):

I have two temporary crowns to deal with for the next three weeks, so I have to be careful of what I eat. Nothing too hard or sticky. Bran flakes should be OK since I drown them in vanilla almond milk.

Lately I’ve been super addicted to greens – green salads, green smoothies, etc. Green smoothies have become my new coffee (since I don’t drink it anymore). I can’t function well without it in the morning! Haha. I have also begun buying the pre-packaged organic salad mixes again because it’s so much easier to get a large selection of various lettuces that way. When I buy various heads of lettuce, something always goes bad before I’m able to eat it. Buying the pre-packaged salad mixes makes me a little nervous because I know they are irradiated, but… oh well.

So I’m in a bit of a quandary right now over my diet. For one thing, my hair is falling out in strands. Now, this happens every year in the summer – I recall it happening many times before and it’s always super-annoying because I have such long hair. However, I am suspecting that maybe more of it is coming out than usual this time. It’s not like I can pull on it and it comes out – nothing like that. But I am finding more of it around lately – much more. The strands loosen or something and hang at the end of my hair, annoying me to no end. Plus, my hair has gone from being shiny, silky and soft to dull, flat and lifeless. I am so disappointed, to be honest. My hair is one of my best features and now it sucks! Healthy hair and strong nails are huge indications of health, and lately, my hair has been bad and my nails just OK – not their best, but they aren’t as strong as they were a few months ago either.

What can I do? What should I do? I have spent some serious time thinking about this situation for the past few weeks and have come to the conclusion that maybe – just maybe – it’s my ‘mostly’ vegan diet causing this. I mean, it can’t be lack of protein because I’ve had plenty of protein over the past few months in the form of grains, beans, seeds, nuts and other veggie proteins. (I still occasionally eat cooked vegan meals – I haven’t quite transitioned back into fruitarian yet, although I’m easily eating 7+ servings of fruit per day these days). Back when I was eating eggs and a yogurt every morning, my hair was simply amazing. I got tons of compliments. So… it got me wondering if I should start eating a yogurt every day again to see if that helps. (I can’t stomach the thought of eating eggs anymore so that is simply out of the question.) I’ve been contemplating this for a couple of weeks now and even bought some yogurt a couple of weeks ago, but hadn’t touched it. Until yesterday…

The funniest thing about the sudden yogurt buying was that I spent several hours one day watching TV, and there were a million dairy commercials on that day. Suddenly the thought came into my mind – and I am NOT kidding, it literally popped into my mind – that I need to start eating dairy for health. How weird is that? It’s odd how the thought would come out of nowhere like that when I have been so adamantly against dairy for a few months now.

Anyway, as for eggs… truth be told, eating eggs regularly (nearly every day) has always been the #1 thing to make my hair its absolute best. I’m not going to lie. I think it’s the vitamin K and/or E in them. But I just cannot stomach eating eggs, especially now knowing what I know about them.

So I’ve made a tough decision. As of yesterday, I’ve given up on veganism and have decided to just settle on vegetarianism for the time being. Yesterday and today I’ve had a non-fat Fage Greek yogurt (which supposedly has the least amount of lactose in it) with my salad at lunch. I was surprised to find that I actually like it plain. Most people say they have to add stuff to it. It seemed to digest OK (well, somewhat, I had a little tummy upset that went away). I’m also now taking the Mega Mineral supplement, which has all of the stuff I sometimes come up lacking in my daily totals (calcium, zinc, iron, D, iodine). I am going to look into a Vitamin K supplement as well.

I figure one serving of dairy about 5 times a week should be OK. I don’t know… I feel guilty for eating the yogurt, but at the same time, I’ve never given up cheese or dairy completely for a long period of time anyway. (I’ve had cheese roughly twice a week since that long 2 1/2-week stretch without any). I still think the dairy industry is cruel.

So I guess I’m a hypocrite. But I’m concerned that my body isn’t getting proper nutrition and I’m not sure what else to do. There are only so many supplements I am willing to take.

I’m going to do this for a while and see how it goes. I hope my hair gets better, it really sucks to walk around with horrible hair when you’ve had great hair your entire life!

Please… no harsh criticism in the comments. I already feel guilty!

Here’s a picture of the salad I had yesterday for lunch:

It was delicious – mixed salad greens, English cucumbers, tomatoes and red peppers with an organic and all-natural roasted red pepper dressing.

I’ll be honest and admit that I’ve eaten very low calories in the past few days. Lower than I usually do. (And no, this isn’t the reason for the hair situation because that started over a month ago). I realized once I started REALLY writing EVERYTHING down that I eat and/or drink, that I had been eating MUCH higher calorie totals than I thought on most days – like over 2000! No wonder my weight loss has been so slow. So, in an effort to correct this, I’ve cut [way] back temporarily to see if the scale will get moving. I have yet to weigh myself though because I keep forgetting until it’s too late in the day!

Later Update:
I am so excited! Because I run fan blogs for certain CW shows, they put me on their mailing list and I now have in my possession the pilot episodes for ‘The Beautiful Life’, ‘Melrose Place’ and ‘The Vampire Diaires’. Yay!

Green grapes, cantaloupe, spinach, mango, ice. About 350 cals worth. (I filled that glass twice with smoothie, I always make a lot!)

Lunch was several bananas – I had a bunch of them to either eat or freeze today or they’d get overripe. I also had some organic cheese cracker snacks. (Oops). Altogether 418 calories. The bananas I have are pretty small and I weighed them to get the correct calorie amount.

Dinner was one of Amy’s organic veggie soups, plus two more bananas. 264 calories.

My intake wasn’t very diverse today, so I had a mineral supplement, which has all of the minerals, plus iodine, zinc and calcium in it. I also drank lots and lots of water to dilute the sodium from the soup and crackers.

So I’ve only had 1032 calories today (too low, definitely) but today was a very relaxed (and somewhat lazy) day anyway. I was dying to get out for a walk but it was SO disgustingly hot and humid – mid nineties.

All in all, not bad…

I’m following the advice of someone who left a comment the other day and having my starches earlier in the day. Meaning, for lunch I’ll probably have a baked potato and maybe some more fruit (or some nuts and seeds). Then dinner will be another (lower calorie) smoothie.

Yum!

I saw the mouse AGAIN last night. Literally as soon as I turned off my kitchen light and went into my bedroom, prepared to go to bed, it came out of hiding. I had my sister on the phone and I went back to the kitchen to refill my water glass less than 2 minutes later and it was on the back of my counter AGAIN. However, I think I figured out what it was after – the sesame seeds. I had a small jar of roasted sesame seeds on my spice rack thingie and it was sniffing around by it. So, I tossed them out, took out the garbage and wiped the sink and counter down (again) with a bleach cleaner.

In the middle of the night I heard something crashing in the apartment, but when I got up this morning I didn’t find anything knocked over.

Anyway, I just went out onto my balcony to watch the sun come up (my new favorite morning pastime). It’s already hot and disgusting out there! No chance of being able to take a power walk today….

I see why so many people rave about the Vita-mix… seriously, it made an amazing smoothie! Perfect smooth and creamy consistency and I didn’t have to add any water! In my old blender, I absolutely had to have lots of water or juice or it wouldn’t blend at all. I am sure that this is one of the reasons I had trouble digesting the green smoothies I used to make. (Well, that and the fact that the smoothies weren’t blended properly.)

Here’s a couple of photos of the first smoothie I made:

OK, it might not look appetizing – it’s brownish green, but it’s delicious, I assure you.

Ingredients:

frozen strawberries (180 grams)

1 banana

pineapple (160 grams)

2 kale leaves

blueberries (50 grams)

Now for the bad news… I have another mouse. Yep. Not happy about that.

Not bad for one meal! Not pictured was the brazil nut that I ate, which added to the selenium count.

By the way, the juice wasn’t very tasty but I didn’t mind, as my taste buds have changed immensely over the past 2 months. I love the bitter taste of pure vegetable juice now, even if it technically doesn’t taste “good”. Hard to explain. Some people get grossed out when they hear the combos of juice I make, but to me it’s damn good. This morning’s juice was made with rainbow chard, kale, romaine lettuce, 1 red bell pepper, 1 cucumber and 1 carrot.

I’ve been going to Whole Foods the past couple of days and getting a smoothie – their blender is top-notch and blends fruits and veggies together perfectly! The combo I got yesterday was: bananas, strawberries, orange juice, mango, spinach and celery. The (super cute) guy who made it for me sampled the bit of smoothie that was left behind and he really liked it, which surprised him. It was absolutely divine-tasting to me!

Anyway, I got an hour of solid walking in yesterday – first 30 minutes in the morning when it was just starting to rain, so I was speed-walking to the point of almost running. Then in the afternoon when my sister, niece and I took a walk.

My body was definitely trying to get rid of something last night/this morning… I woke up with a coated tongue and really bad breath! (TMI, I know). Both classic signs of night/morning detox. I ate really cleanly yesterday so who knows what I was detoxing. (Probably just my body going back into “cleansing” mode again). But I feel great today and plan to take another walk if it doesn’t start raining.

My back seems just about back to normal… it healed pretty quickly, probably due to all the fresh food I eat.

I still haven’t gotten onto the scale, but I am already seeing new changes in my body – probably from the exercise. I will probably get on tomorrow morning, but I am so looking forward to seeing a number in the 150’s that I don’t want to get on and get disappointed!

I’m not sure what it is about this particular mixture, but it is SO good that it’s unbelievably divine. It’s a combination of hearty flavors – carrots and apples for sweetness, tomatoes for richness, and celery for saltiness. (The spinach taste doesn’t seem to come through, as very little juice is produced from it).

I know I haven’t updated much lately and I’ve kind of just felt like taking a break, but I thought I’d post a photo of what I’m having for breakfast today: perfectly ripened organic bananas! (I actually ate 5 of those bananas pictured). It has taken a lot of legwork, but I’ve finally found two good sources of bananas that actually ripen correctly and are oh so delicious. Yummy.

Bananas that are underripe are more starch than sugar, and bananas that are overripe are turning into alcohol. Perfectly ripe bananas are the perfect kind of sugar that the body can use for energy and digest perfectly.

Bananas that ripen with lots of dark lines or smudges have been gased or had chemicals sprayed on them to keep them from ripening correctly (mostly due to store transportation). This even happens to organic bananas, unfortunately. The bananas that ripen with only dots/spots with only a couple of dark lines or smudges haven’t been tampered with (much if at all). They have fewer nasty strings inside too – sometimes none. And last but not least, the untampered with bananas open very easily when they are ripe.

Anyway, I’ve been sleeping a LOT the past several days! I am talking between 9-12 hours a night! I’ve been so hungry and eating a lot of fruit and veggies, too. Not sure if it’s PMS or detox or what is causing it. But when I’m up and about, I feel fabulous and energetic. When I mono-meal on bananas or pineapple for my first meal or two of the day, I feel even more fabulous. But when I go to bed – watch out – I’m gonna be there a while!

I’m also noticing that I have no body aches or pains lately. You don’t always notice small aches and pains until they go away (or get worse). Little things that used to hurt only a bit, like getting up off the ground, or my first few steps out of bed in the morning… now don’t hurt at all.

That’s all for now… I’m meeting my cousin’s wife for coffee in about an hour. I haven’t had coffee since two weeks ago when I was in Branson… so I’m really looking forward to it! For those of you who don’t know, I drank coffee every day for the past 9 years until only recently, when I finally kicked the daily habit. It wasn’t easy – the weaning/withdrawal period caused a lot of headaches! But I’ve been only drinking coffee ‘once in a while’ for the past month or so.

So yeah I definitely have a tropical fruit addiction right now! Here’s a photo of my little “ripening” area for bananas, pineapple and star fruit:

(I’ve never seen such giant star fruit!)

I got on the scale this morning even though I’m smack dab in the middle of PMS, and I’ve only gained 2 pounds! Usually around this time I’m several pounds up – sometimes 5 or more.

So far today I’ve eaten 3 1/2 bananas and almost a pound of pineapple. I’m going to continue eating fruit all day, plus make myself a veggie juice, and will also have few ‘raw green crackers’ I got yesterday. They are made with stuff like kale, collards, tomatoes, spinach, garlic, carrots, etc and are surprisingly good! Dinner will be vegan pizza made with all-natural ingredients.

Anyway, I’m feeling and looking much better today so I’m off to get some other things done!

Edited to add: I forgot to mention that I got my order of organic veggies and fruit yesterday. The bananas don’t have black lines all over them and are actually ripening evenly! And I tried the spinach earlier – it was MUCH fresher – to the point of being crisp – than anything I’ve ever bought in a grocery store! The romaine lettuce and spinach were each packed very nice and neatly and weren’t all messy and picked-through like most grocery spinach and romaine. I plan to try the romaine lettuce tonight with my vegan pizza.

Well I made it to Branson and within 5 minutes of walking into my hotel room, I broke my veganism. The concierge had put a plate of red grapes and various gourmet cheeses and crackers on a plate, plus a bottle of white wine in a bucket. Being that I hadn’t had cheese in a while, I couldn’t help myself… and I cannot tell you how good that cheese was.

Gulp.

Oh well. I’m not going to beat myself up. So long as I don’t eat meat I’ll be fine. (In my eyes, that is).

Anyway, the drive up was OK, although it poured rain half the way.

Here’s the fruit in my fridge:

That’s tomatoes, strawberries, pineapple, cantaloupe, mango, orange and grapefruit slices.

I’ll update more later and possibly add more pictures!

It seems I have become sick with either laryngitis or some sort of chest or throat cold. I’m losing my voice and have had a deep cough since late yesterday. I could blame it on low carbing, but I think it has to do with our crazy ever-fluctuating weather here. It has been so warm here in the past several days that the trees are flowering. (This doesn’t usually start in the northeast until May, so it’s a treat to get it so early here). I used to get this throat thing every spring and fall when I was growing up in So Cal – when the weather changed. I was woken up around 5am this morning by some of the strongest gusty winds I’ve ever seen – my building wasn’t just vibrating in the wind, it was creaking and moving. I can only imagine what the people on higher floors went through!

I’m taking some tips from some of the raw and/or health books I’ve read recently… it seems when you are sick, it’s a good thing to stop eating and instead drink smoothies, water, juice and broth. It lets your digestive system rest so your body can fight to heal itself. Almost like a fast. I haven’t eaten solid food since last night around 8:30pm (which is really 9:30pm since the clocks went up). It’s 12:40pm now.

Anyway, I’ve decided to add some delicious fruit and veggie-infused water drinks to my “fast”. I got a couple of awesome recipes in a raw book I have. I made a cucumber and mint infused jug of water yesterday morning and drank it chilled in the afternoon and evening… delicious.

Here is a recipe that I got from a book called Raw Food Life Force Energy:

1/2 sliced carrot

1 lemon

1/2 sliced cucumber

a few sprigs of fresh mint (finally found use for the mint I bought the other day!)

64 ounces/half a gallon of distilled/purified water

Mix together in jug and put in fridge for a couple hours. It comes out delicious, refreshing and doesn’t really have many calories or carbs when you drink it. (Since you only drink the water itself).

So we’ll see how long I can go without solid food! I’m also resting and really taking it easy today. I just want to get better as quickly as possible.

Later Update: Well I have officially been “fasting” for 19 hours, and my laryngitis almost seems to have disappeared! How weird is that?

Baby spinach
Frozen peaches
fresh pear slices
Distilled water

It came out pretty good! Next time I am going to put a banana in there, perhaps some parsley and more spinach – and a little less kale.

Mmmm. It’s actually pretty darn good!

Yellow pear tomatoes are delicious! They are the latest in a long line of new fruits and veggies that I’ve been trying lately… so far I’ve tried dandelion greens (which are OK), papaya (also OK) and golden raspberries. I’m waiting for passion fruit and star fruit to become available.

I would love to become a raw person who eats only fruits, nuts, seeds, sprouts and veggies… but I’m not sure if I want to cut chicken and eggs out of my diet! It just seems the more fresh fruits and veggies I eat, the more I want them, and only them. There is a ton of information out there about how a raw diet (or even fruitarian diet) heals all sorts of ills in the body, reverses aging, fights disease, etc. Fruit does seem to be the perfect food – it is chock full of vitamins, minerals, fiber, enzymes, etc. In its natural state it doesn’t even need to be refrigerated (except, of course, to prolong the freshness). We digest it easier than anything else. To be honest, I’d love to be a fruitarian. But it would be awfully hard to get there, and I’d be missing my chicken and eggs!

My next goal is to transition dairy out of my diet completely. I’m working on it… and there is no rush.

The oddest thing of all is that I don’t really think of my weight so much these days. Right now it’s more about nutrition and health than anything else! But I do plan to get on the scale in a couple days and see if any more weight has been lost…

^^^My lunch today. (Eating as I type this, in fact). Blackberry phones take terrible photos for some reason. It’s SableFish (black cod), cooked spinach, and a salad made with: romaine lettuce & herbs, colored bell peppers and tomatoes. I have come to absolutely LOVE the herb romaine lettuce mix. The brand is ‘Organic Girl’ and the mix is triple-washed and packed in sustainable plastic packaging.

I’ve noticed lately that the more healthy stuff – like veggies and seeds – I eat, the more I want and enjoy them. I never in a million years thought I’d crave stuff like spinach and raw herbs. But… I do now.

Earlier I was freaked out when I saw my body fat % because I thought it was in the obese range. However, after my power walk, I looked the number up online and it’s just in the overweight range (which yes, is bad enough). Funnily enough after my walk, I had lost 1.5% of body fat.

Yeah… I can tell that checking my body fat % is going to be even more of a compulsion than checking my weight is.

Arghghghghghghgh!

Anyway, this lunch is huge and I doubt I’ll be able to finish it all. Dinner is going to be baked chicken and steamed or boiled veggies. I have a bunch of veggies that I need to try and get through before they go bad. They are easier to eat when cooked, so that’s what I’m doing tonight.

My lunch:

That’s plain yogurt with a sprinkling of cinnamon, which is supposed to be good for the blood sugar. There is also a romaine herb lettuce salad with tri-colored bell peppers, carrots, and sesame seeds. There’s a small piece of sharp cheddar thrown in for good measure.

I am feeling fabulous today!!! Despite waking up with a painful neck and shoulders AGAIN, I got up, ate my now-usual breakfast, worked out on my elliptical, and took the following supplements (which I know are contributing towards my “good” feeling): 2 coconut oil capsules, 1 kelp tablet (which has iodine in it – needed for detoxification of impurities, plus helps the thyroid), 1 chewable sugar-free Vitamin C/E tablet (sweetened with stevia), and a Zinc tablet.

I am planning to have an organic chicken breast and veggies for dinner. Later tonight I may be going out to a restaurant with some friends, but I refuse to touch anything at the restaurant except perhaps salad and mineral water. We usually go to Ihop or Village Inn (yuck to both), which are unfortunately two of the only restaurants that stay open late around here. Ihop has a great-tasting chicken ceasar salad, but they – like most other restaurants – flavor the salad with MSG and other artificial seasonings. No thanks!

I finally stepped on the scale this morning, and lo and behold I am down another couple of pounds! So I have checked off the -10 pounds box in the sidebar.

Well, we are in the middle of yet another bad ice storm, and I think I’m going to be stuck at home for the next couple of days! I’m supposed to go somewhere later tonight with a friend, but I don’t trust anyone’s driving on the pure ice that is now coating the roads pretty badly. It’s raining at 27 degrees out… NOT a good combo. And I refuse to drive in this crap myself. I hope it doesn’t get bad enough to knock out the power or any services…! I think I’ll take the time stuck at home to catch up on laundry, some of my other websites, and maybe even utilize the building’s gym.

Anyway, I am currently eating the most delicious-tasting turkey breast cutlet that I’ve ever had… I oven-roasted it with a bit of olive oil, organic butter, cilantro and garlic pepper. To go along with it, I am having a romaine-herb salad with sliced tomatoes and colored bell peppers topped with organic sesame seeds:

Yum. Just a week ago, this salad would have tasted incredibly bland. But since detoxing my taste buds from chemicals and toxins located in processed foods, fresh food has become incredibly delicious. (And I promise you I am NOT exaggerating).

Overall I’m feeling pretty good today, although I was extremely tired this morning and did not want to get up. My waist, hips, thighs and stomach areas all feel smaller today. Scale is still reading the same number as yesterday though. I really need to stop weighing myself every day… I will see more dramatic results if I only do it once a week.

In any case, I will report on my weight loss one week from today… I know my weight stats are confusing since I never reveal the actual number to you all. I am going to start keeping track of the weight I lose again in the sidebar. The goal of -55 pounds is from my highest-ever weight, not my current weight (which is 8 pounds less than my highest-ever weight).

Anyway, I have my dinner all planned out… it’s going to be oven-baked wild Alaskan sockeye salmon and spinach. Perhaps some berries for dessert since I didn’t have them with my breakfast.

I am confused… the chicken breasts I buy (the Smart Chicken brand) say that a 4 ounce serving is 110 calories, yet when I go online, other sites say they range from 140 to 175 calories? Hmm…

Anyway, I found a couple of other organic markets in my area, one of which I plan to check out later today. It’s pretty amazing to see and taste the difference in organic fruits – especially citrus fruits like oranges, lemons and limes. I mean, take a typical non-organic orange, for example, and it’s disgusting – tons of that white inner rind stuff and tons of seeds. It’s a dull orange color and not very tasty. Yet take an organic orange and it’s juicy, has very little of that disgusting white stuff and virtually no seeds inside! The same goes for limes and lemons. And the taste is SO much sweeter.

Why are regular (non-organic) citrus fruits so full of seeds? If anyone knows the answer to that, let me know!

I’ve been reading up a bit more on nutrition and have learned about the evils of MSG – and how it’s in practically every product on regular grocery shelves. You name it, it’s probably in there – breads, soups, canned veggies, cereal, meats, etc etc. It’s even found in some ice creams, cheeses and yogurts! I am extremely sensitive to large amounts of MSG… it causes me to have terrible migraines and other symptoms. I wonder what all the small amounts of it has been doing to me over the years? Perhaps it is one cause for my previously feeling like sh*t most of the time?

I guess I will find out after going without for a few weeks…!

When one thinks about all of the poison (MSG, aspartame, tons of other chemicals) and genetically modified food found in our grocery stores, one must wonder what on earth is going on in our country? Why is all of this crap added to our foods in the first place? Taste? Convenience? Shelf life?

Anyway, enough rambling for now… here is a before and after photo of the chopped veggie salad I am currently eating with my lunch (grilled chicken breast).

Organic celery, green bell pepper, red, orange and yellow bell peppers, carrots and sugar snap peas:

After chopping it up:

Looks delicious, no?

<s>I am probably going to have baked turkey for dinner along with some more veggies (likely spinach).</s> I’m also going to log at least an hour on the elliptical today…

Later edit: I ended up having 2 omega-3 enriched organic hard-boiled eggs, 1 cup spinach, and an organic boiled veggie-mix (carrots, asparagas, green onions, green beans, cauliflower) brushed with a bit of extra-virgin organic olive oil for dinner. Surprisingly enough, it was filling!

This is what I ate for lunch (pictured above): delicious whole wheat fettuccine (with flax seed and omega 3), organic four-cheese sauce, a dash or two of Parmesan cheese, a veggie salad and some Pellegrino. The total calories comes out to around 300. The only veggies in this salad are romaine lettuce, carrots, and red and orange peppers. I think I will have another one of these with my dinner tonight, only add in the missing mushrooms, celery and cucumber. The best thing about this salad is that it takes forever to eat, so by the time you are done, you are satisfied!

Anyway, I blew it big-time last night with my diet. Altogether I probably ingested around 2700 calories yesterday. But I’m not beating myself up… today is a new day and I’m back on track! As a matter of fact, it’s already 3pm and I’ve only had just over 500 calories. I’m going to stick to about 1000 calories today to make up for yesterday’s indiscretion…

I went and bought a citrus fruit juicer yesterday, so I’m going to start adding in some freshly squeezed orange and/or lime juice to my daily regime!
