Sore Throat And New Plan

February 24th, 2008 by Rian | 5 Comments | Filed in Miscellaneous

I still have a sore throat! Oh well.

I have a new eating plan that I have sort-of been sticking to for a few days now anyway. It’s what I like to call “natural and clean as possible” and involves something like this:

Breakfast - egg white omelet, glass of soy milk (low sugar version), piece of fruit, coffee
Lunch - 1 cup of some type of vegetable soup, plus steamed veggies, piece of fruit, maybe brown organic rice in place of the soup on some days
Dinner - some type of lean protein (either chicken or fish, occasional steak), another vegetable, carton of sugar free/fat free yogurt
Dessert - piece of fruit and occasional piece of low-fat cheese

When working out - 1/2 bottle of water mixed with 1/2 bottle of gatorade
Vitamins and EmergenC daily
Plus at least 8 glasses of water daily

I don’t plan to add calories up, but this to me seems like an extremely healthy way of eating. It has almost no processed food in it and very little sugar other than natural fruit sugars.

As for working out, I will still do it about 5 times a week, nothing extremely strenuous though.

Feel free to give your comments on the plan… at this point, I don’t care what the calorie count is, if it’s too low or high. For one thing, I’m already sick. For another, I feel as though I need to rid my body of chemicals, alcohol and processed foods. I’ve been easing myself into this plan already… I am on it fully as of today!

Super Quick Update

February 23rd, 2008 by Rian | No Comments | Filed in Miscellaneous

The darn cold virus has hit once again, this time with a vengeance. I’m so mad because I was supposed to do another great workout today then go down to Boston with B, but I have a sore throat that won’t go away and I feel crappy. It hurts anytime I swallow or talk. So I’ve been lying around the house reading all day. It’s all I have the energy to do at the moment. Even sitting here at the computer is tiring.

I’m not going to bother getting upset about it. I’m simply going to take another Vitamin C cocktail and hope for the best, and get plenty of rest. Maybe I’ll kick this thing really quickly.

Also… my appetite has suddenly come back! I’ve been eating on and off all day for a change. Nothing major, but definitely more than I have been eating. Mostly healthy stuff like chicken, brown rice, egg whites, etc. For some reason I’m craving pizza like crazy. I think my metabolism could use a good boost - i.e., extra food for one day. So I will probably order Pizza Hut for dinner, although surely with my stomach shrinkage, I’ll only be able to eat a slice and a half.

Well I’m off to go lay back in bed and read yet another book… already finished 2 today!

Later edit:

I ended up scrapping the pizza idea. I’m trying hard to stick to the natural food type of eating plan I’ve been doing lately! Instead I had an organic chinese rice bowl/chicken thing and another salad for dinner. I’m also drinking tons of water tonight, for some reason my body seems parched! I’m feeling a little better though.

Exercise, Snow & A New Phone

February 22nd, 2008 by Rian | 1 Comment | Filed in Miscellaneous

So… it’s snowing again. Good ole’ New Hampshire will be buried in 6-8 inches (or more) once this storm is over. Grrrrrrreat. I can’t wait to shovel myself out tomorrow.

But shovel I will… I don’t care if I have to ride a sled or ski to my gym tomorrow, I WILL be working out again for an hour, like I did today! (More on that below).

So, I got a new phone yesterday since my old one pretty much sh*t the bed. This is the one I got:

phone1.jpg

And yes, I am in love with it. It’s like a mini computer. If you want to see the phone’s specs, click here. (PDF file).

So from now on, I shouldn’t have a problem accessing my email or moderating comments (on theskinnywebsite.com) when I’m away from the computer! The phone has a slide-out keyboard and full internet capabilities, among tons of other features. I’ve already been texting people like crazy because now it is 1000% easier than my old phone was.

So moving on…… before the snow got TOO bad, I went for an hour-long workout. I woke up feeling as though any cold virus germs had left my body. (Maybe the Vitamin C and Zinc combo IS a wonder drug?) So, I did: 15 minutes on the spinning machine, 17 minutes on the treadmill, and 28 on the elliptical. I also found a solution to the “low blood sugar during/after workout” problem - mixing half a bottle of gatorade with half a bottle of water. It seemed to hydrate me without being TOO sweet. Anyway, I went up to various levels on all of the machines, including the treadmill. It’s weird - I seem to get a better workout on a treadmill (just speed walking) then I do in real life speed-walking. Also, I noticed that around the last 8 minutes of my elliptical workout, I was feeling kind of light-headed. My body def isn’t used to that much exercise at once. I usually shoot for about 45 minutes or so. Today was a very solid and strenuous hour, which I plan to repeat tomorrow AND Sunday.

So anyway, I’m high on endorphins right now.

As for food intake… I did OK today so far. Breakfast was my now-usual bowl of Total cereal with soy milk and a piece of fruit (nectarine today). Lunch was iceberg salad, dressing, and 2 ounces of cheese. Because of this appetite thing, I have been just eating whatever sounds good for each meal. There is still no way I could do the six meal thing because of lack of appetite. But I think I’m doing fine. I’m sure I’ll have chicken and veggies and maybe some organic brown rice for dinner. The snowfall has reached ridiculous proportions and I’m probably homebound for the night… although B said he was coming downtown (where I live) and knowing him, we may hit a bar later. I’m also planning another Boston trip tomorrow afternoon. Maybe.

Eye Doctor Follow Up

February 21st, 2008 by Rian | 1 Comment | Filed in Miscellaneous

Today was my follow-up appointment with my eye doctor. (See this post if you can’t remember why I had a follow up appointment). To make a long story short, I was told by my eye doctor a month ago not to wear my contacts for a month.

Well, I’ve been wearing my contacts anyway, but just not nearly as often. Anytime I’m home, I wear my glasses. I just cannot see nearly as well with my glasses because I have a bit of a focusing problem.

So I figured the eye doctor would be a bit upset with me. But when I confessed my sin to him today, he took it in stride. Thankfully my eyes have healed from the last time he saw me. He said my eyes were looking good and that I can now wear my contacts for up to 8 hours per day.

YAY!!!!!!! Seriously, I was SO happy to hear this. People who don’t have bad vision don’t understand the concept of not being able to see clearly. But those of you who do…… you know why I’m so happy. :-D

Anyway, I also finally admitted to him that I’ve been getting blurred vision in my left eye - mostly in the afternoons - which lasts for several hours, along with pain that occurs somewhere around the left side of my face. This is something I’ve been getting for several months now, and recently it’s gotten worse. He was concerned and told me that the next time this happens, to call him and try and get down there for an eye pressure test right away. He said “I’m not trying to scare you or anything, but it’s important we find out why this is happening. Try and keep a journal of when this happens, and call the office and tell them you need to come down for a pressure test when this occurs.”

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat. I’ll add this to my list of 1,432,634 other things I need to do.

Anyway, moving on… diet stuff. Nothing much to report today on that front. I woke up around 11am, (had trouble falling asleep last night due to major stress), wasn’t hungry. Everything looked disgusting, so I didn’t have breakfast. I was hungry around 2pm, so I ate. That about sums up my daily food count so far. It’s 7:30pm right now, and I’m sure I’ll eat dinner at some point. No exercise today, I have a headache and feel like crap. (I always get a headache after the eye doctor’s, bright lights and air being squirted into my eyes aren’t exceedingly fun to endure).

I’m hoping to go back to my regular schedule tomorrow, gym-wise at least.

Another Update

February 20th, 2008 by Rian | 3 Comments | Filed in Miscellaneous

Sorry about the loud, annoying whining in the below post… this “get sick when I try hard to be super healthy” thing really gets to me sometimes. It’s happened to me all my life, in fact. And it really gets me down because I still have so much weight to lose, and I can’t help envisioning my next five months being sick every time I up my workout regime…

I’m actually feeling better. The cold hasn’t hit me fully. This morning, before taking my EmergenC, it was bothering me a lot, but it went away about 45 minutes after I finished it. But I can feel the virus lingering, in the form of feeling rundown, slight congestion, slight sore throat. I’m positive that my body is working to fight it off right now.

So to help my immune system out, I’m upping my carb intake just a bit. I’m eating a veggie sub from my favorite place here in town - it has tons of veggies, plus cheese and light mayo. (Yep, the dairy ban went right out the window). I had Total cereal with vanilla soy milk for breakfast plus 1/3 of a peach. As usual these days, I couldn’t finish either. For dinner, who knows what I’m having, since I’m so stuffed from this sandwich.

I want SO SO badly to go work out tonight, like I did last night. Exercising at night keeps me out of trouble.

Later update:

Well I got invited out to an Irish pub tonight, and consumed two vodka cranberries. Even after having those, I am still only around 1300 calories for the day. Not bad since I didn’t work out!

Of Course

February 20th, 2008 by Rian | 8 Comments | Filed in Miscellaneous

Of course……

I eat healthy, up my workout regime, and….

Of course I get sick. With yet another cold.

I mean, this is so stupid. Beyond stupid. I’m guzzling Vitamin C cocktails like they are going out of style, yet…

My body is definitely trying to fight off a cold. (Sneezing, tired, runny nose, congestions…)

It hasn’t given in completely, but I’m going to have to give up any thoughts I had of working out today. That will only make it worse!

This whole thing is so unfair. I mean, I try SO hard to eat healthy, lose weight, exercise and get stronger.

And… my body decides to get sick EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

Is it no wonder that I have such a hard time slimming down? I mean, who out there reading this would want to be sick for months on end, simply by making a healthier lifestyle choice?

Or I suppose I could remain overweight and unhealthy.

Either way, I lose.
