Of Course
February 20th, 2008 by Rian | Filed under Miscellaneous.Of course……
I eat healthy, up my workout regime, and….
Of course I get sick. With yet another cold.
I mean, this is so stupid. Beyond stupid. I’m guzzling Vitamin C cocktails like they are going out of style, yet…
My body is definitely trying to fight off a cold. (Sneezing, tired, runny nose, congestions…)
It hasn’t given in completely, but I’m going to have to give up any thoughts I had of working out today. That will only make it worse!
This whole thing is so unfair. I mean, I try SO hard to eat healthy, lose weight, exercise and get stronger.
And… my body decides to get sick EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
Is it no wonder that I have such a hard time slimming down? I mean, who out there reading this would want to be sick for months on end, simply by making a healthier lifestyle choice?
Or I suppose I could remain overweight and unhealthy.
Either way, I lose.

You ate only 750 calories yesterday? That’s why you are getting sick. Have you seen a nutritionist?
Just rest today. Think positive thoughts. working out does lower your immunity when you first start but continue to eat well and rest and just get right back at it when you feel better.
Elizabeth, who said I only ate 750 calories yesterday? Not me. I had around 1600 in fact. Read the post from yesterday.
Oh I feel ya sister. Happened to me last week - was just finally getting back on my routine and WHAM! Bronchitis. Lovely! Hang in there - you’ll make it!! Just concentrate on getting better.
Don’t worry about it girl! Just give your body time to recover itself. You won’t lose your progress from it. There’s no way you will remain overweight with the motivation and willpower you’ve got anyway!=D
“Working out does lower your immunity.” - - Research has shown this statement to be true for people undergoing a rigorous exercise program (for example marathon runners or Ironman triathletes.) I don’t think believe that everyday exerciser would see immune-lowering effects. (Based on my Sports Nutrition textbook. Of course, everyone’s different.)
I’ve also read that unless you are dizzy or throwing up that you can still exercise. I know that my friends who are serious with Ironman will train no matter what.
Didn’t you mention that the weather changed abruptly? I’ve heard that abrupt weather changes can cause some people to get sick. I have no reference to back that statement up though. : )
Hope you feel better soon!
OK - I just checked my Sports Nutrition textbook, and it lists several studies that disprove the statement that “working out lowers immunity.” Like I mentioned in the previous post, high intensity programs (”repeated cycles of unusually intesne exercise”) can have an effect on the immune system.
I wanted to back up my previous post to support Rian in her exercise program.
MandyKat, thanks for your comments and research! I know from the past that anytime my weight loss starts up again full force, I get sick. Exercise, of course, speeds up the weight loss/slimdown. Therefore, I get sick. It’s always happened that way for me regardless of what I do. So technically I can’t blame the exercise, but the increased efforts to lose weight instead.
I used to get sick from seasonal changes - back when I live in So Cal, where there are only two real seasons. Since moving 5 1/2 years ago, however, my body is now used to the constantly changing temperatures and weather!
