I Hate the Scale
May 30th, 2007 by Rian | Filed under Miscellaneous.I swear, I have been exercising a LOT and eating well. Seriously - I haven’t really overeaten or pigged out in weeks.
But now the scale is going back up. In 2 days, I have gained 4 pounds back.
Why??!! What did I do? Is it muscle? I have been doing a much higher-intensity workout on my stationary bike. But… 4 pounds in 2 days? Wtf.
Grrrrrrrrrr. I hate the scale. I hate my metabolism.

Dont get discouraged. Many factors can play into this move of the scale. All of them have water retention as the culprit. First, you said that you have upped your intensity of workouts. Your body might be a little dehydrated; this results in holding on to what water it does have. Try upping your water intake. You should be drinking about .5 ounces for every pound you weigh. And, since you work out, try getting just a bit more than that. Second, the time of the month and hormones also can cause this. I gain about 6 to 8 pounds of water a week before my period. If you are close to your period, this might be it. Look at it this way, 4 pounds is the equivalant to 1,400 extra calories and I HIGHLY doubt you consumed that much in two day.
Hang in there!
That sounds frustrating. It’s hard to tell what the cause is, so you never know whether you’re overreacting to normal fluctuations or whether you need to adjust something in your fitness regime. If your clothes still feel good and you know you’re on the right track then try not to worry.
I don’t know how you’re working out or what you’re eating, so it’s hard to comment on that. Not to mention that i have no qualifications! For my own fat loss this year, i kept adapting my program as i progressed and my motivation grew. Initially i ate 3 large meals a day, drank alcohol 5-6 times a week, and did lots of cardio. Now i’m eating 5 smaller protein based meals, drink alcohol once a week, and alternate resistance training with cardio. I also walk 1/2 hour a day. I have had the world’s most sluggish metabolism all my life. I think with this program I’m on now, it’s actually starting to pick up.
I know what you mean.
I eat healthily, I certainly don’t eat too much, nor too little, and I exercise enough… But do I lose weight? No!
It’s so damn frustrating. And I can’t eat less because I don’t want to starve myself, you know.
[...] going to be honest with you all now about my weight. Remember how in this post I told you all that I had shot back up 4 pounds and that it was water weight? It turns out that it [...]
